Introducing the Book "Management of Industrial Chemical Incidents"

  Various definitions have been offered for a hazardous material. It can be said that each organization, depending on the nature of its work, has provided a definition of a hazardous material. For example, the U.S. Department of Transportation has defined a hazardous material from a transportation perspective: "Any material, in any quantity or form, that during commercial transport could pose unacceptable risks to health, safety, and property." The U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration also considers a hazardous material to be one that poses health or physical hazards to workers.   [caption id="attachment_2598" align="aligncenter" width="327"]
"Industrial Chemical Incident Management"[/caption]   One of the most important and practical definitions offered for a hazardous material in emergency situations is the one stated by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Extremely hazardous substances are those that, in the event of an emergency, have the potential to harm the surrounding environment and community. Accordingly, an EHS is a substance that, due to properties such as toxicity and its physical and chemical characteristics, can harm the community when leaked or released. The EPA has specified the list of these substances and has required all facilities to report the presence of these substances, along with their quantities, to the relevant governmental organizations. Another definition offered by the NFPA considers a hazardous material to be one that can have negative and adverse effects on the health and safety of employees, the community, or the environment. Biological agents and hazardous wastes are also included in this definition.
