It has been known for many years that contact with certain chemicals can be harmful to health.
In the eighteenth century, Paracelsus introduced the dose-response concept regarding toxic substances, and Ramazzini raised the issue of workers' diseases. Ramazzini placed working conditions and occupational diseases side by side and realized that many diseases are related to people's occupations, and he provided recommendations for working postures, hygiene, welfare, ventilation, personal protection, and similar matters.
He advised physicians to always ask about their patients' occupations.
Ramazzini is today known as the father of occupational medicine.
With the advent of the Industrial Revolution between 1760 and 1830 and mass production through industrial machinery, the adverse effects and resulting occupational accidents also increased sharply.
In Britain, occupational safety and health laws took shape from the early nineteenth century (during the Industrial Revolution).

Working conditions for women and children were miserable. They were generally employed in jobs such as mines, working with unguarded machinery, tunnels, and so on. Horrific accidents and disabling diseases were accepted as a fact during this era.
Prominent figures such as Lord Shaftesbury and Charles Dickens tried to bring this matter to Parliament and, despite having many opponents, to make the statesmen of the time aware of the consequences of such a situation, and indeed they were successful.
Laws were drafted for certain activities and machines. For example, the first law concerning the working hours of children and adolescents, limiting them to a maximum of 12 hours per day with specific working conditions such as the presence of a proper ventilation system, was formed and passed in 1802.
In the United States, after the establishment of OSHA, efforts were made to develop and establish all national and even international laws and regulations in America.
Other European organizations also gradually took shape in this regard, until the United Nations established the International Labour Office, or International Labour Organization.
The main goal of this organization is the establishment and promotion of social justice and the rights of workers and employers.
The International Labour Organization was established in 1919.
This organization has developed standards and systems for its members and has numerous charters and conventions.
The International Labour Organization has a very well-equipped international training center in the city of Turin, Italy, and every year it holds numerous training courses free of charge for its members all over the world, among which advanced training courses on safety can also be found.
